Big Toe Infection

A big toenail infection, known as paronychia, is one of the most common infections in the human body.  Left untreated it can lead to serious complications including blood poisoning, a very serious situation that can be avoided with early detection.

The infection, which results from an in-grown toe nail, usually appears as swelling on both sides of the nail.  Infected in-grown nails are on the rise due to shoe gear, sports activities and even heredity. Some people try to treat this condition with “bathroom surgery” by picking, cutting and scraping the affected area. While this may cause some temporary relief, it’s not a wise course of action. Rather, you should visit your podiatrist for a permanent solution.
