Zumba, Hip-Hop and Other Foot Challenging Workouts

The recent popularity of aerobic, dance-related classes like Zumba and Hip Hop, have increased the number of foot and leg injuries.  Thankfully, a little precaution can prevent big problems.

With almost any aerobic activity the balls of your feet receive the biggest impact. To counter this, your shoes should have added padding at the ball of the foot.  Some people choose to wear running shoes, thinking that they are well protected. Not so. Running shoes usually have added padding in the heel since that is the first-impact location for running.  But they are not designed for lateral movement- a big element in any dance-based workout routine.  As a result, the most common ailments in aerobics are shin splints, knee problems, Achilles tendon issues and arch pain. Simply changing your shoes can often alleviate the situation.

If, however, you are wearing proper footwear and experience foot pain, you need to speak with a podiatrist as the issue may be more serious.  You could require a custom orthotic inserted into the shoe to restore balance and stability.
